Every Day is My Favorite Day of the Year....that works, right? Part 1/3

My friend Jeff Barthel recently told me after reading a blog that, "Every day of the year seems to be your favorite day of the year."

I kind of laughed it off and then realized that he was right (he is never right). Throughout the year, events come and go and I label them "my favorite day of the year."

Much like trying to name a best friend, there are many different people who I consider my best friend. I also am one of those people who believes that you can have more than one best friend so why can't I have more than one favorite day as well?

The answer is that I can!

Below I am going to list all of my "favorite days of the year" and there is no doubt that I will forget some. That is because my emotions towards these events are mostly forgotten until they arrive and I get to feel that emotion again. So here we go: A list of my favorite days/weekends of the year and a brief description on why I like the day so much. I will begin in January and work my way towards the end of the year.

January-

New Year's Day- The reason that I like New Year's so much is just that, A NEW YEAR. Everything seems to start fresh. People seem to have a positive outlook on life and try to make themselves better with New Years resolutions. Even if they only last a couple days or a couple weeks, at least people are trying to be better in their every day lives. My resolution this year was to continue to lose weight. It has been more of a struggle of late but I am working hard to continue to lose a couple pounds each week. January 1st also brings about a great day of college football with the Rose Bowl and other New Year's Bowl Games.

20th- January 20th is a great day because it is the birthday of my beautiful girlfriend Cassidy. Over the last few years we have spent together we have spent her birthday doing a variety of things. On her 16th birthday we were at Broadway Pizza and a couple years ago we went to Green Bay for a Brad Paisley concert. This last year was Cassidy's golden birthday so we went out to Minneapolis for the night. It was a great time! I can't wait to see what other events will be in store for future birthdays :)

February-

Super Bowl Sunday- More than just football, the day of the Super Bowl bring about a overall day of happiness in the United States. Thousands of Super Bowl parties full of friends, family and delicious food. Whether your party is based around the social gathering or actually focused around watching the game, Super Bowl parties are a blast. The few people who don't watch football end up watching the Super Bowl because of the commercials, the halftime show, or for the possibility of missing something and being left out. People bet on anything from the time of the National Anthem, to the number of times the announcers say a certain word or phrase. Last year I spent the day at the Barthel residence. We ate delicious food prepared by Judy and watched the game around the living room television. It was a small get together but it was fun to be able to actually watch the game, which doesn't always happen at other SB parties.

March-

Championship Week/Selection Sunday- We coast through March and get by on Mother Nature's Joke that we would actually get nice weather in March. We get one day of 50 degrees and then the next day is 15. McDonalds comes out with Shamrock Shakes (delicious if you have never had one) and then the middle of March arrives. A full week of Conference Championship games that all lead to Selection Sunday. On Selection Sunday I usually sit around with a blank bracket and watch as 68 names are chosen to represent the NCAA in the March Madness tournament. Many of the teams are obvious but then there are those teams that are "on the bubble." They don't know if their resume will get them to the tournament. Did they play tough enough teams? Did they get enough wins on the road? On this Selection Sunday, they find out. They show reactions from teams in their home gym erupting when they find out that they are getting in. They show a few teams who weren't as fortunate. After the teams are announced they spend the next 3 hours analyzing who they believe will win. What a great day for college basketball.

Opening Weekend of March Madness-Thursday and Friday of the tournament are the two best days of the tournament in my opinion. This year we were actually spoiled with how great the NCAA Tournament was. It brought so many OT and close games along with a few buzzer beaters and a ton of upsets. The Thursday and Friday that begin the tournament is the best though. Games from 11-11 both days and everyone is excited because their brackets aren't busted (yet). If you survive the 1st weekend with your bracket, consider yourself a winner.

Ski Weekend- Ever since I can remember my Grandparents have taken their 5 children and Grandchildren out skiing for the weekend. This isn't necessarily in March and to be honest, I don't know why I put it in the March portion of this blog. It is usually on President's weekend but when some of us had Winter sports, we had to extend it into March. Anyways.... On this weekend we head up to Giants Ridge and spend the weekend together. We arrive on Friday afternoon and everyone brings food to share. We catch up with cousins we probably haven't seen in a couple weeks (We are a close family if you haven't figured that out yet) and play cards. We will enjoy a swim in the pool and the hot tub (when it is open). We usually head to bed decently early because Saturday is a busy day on the slopes! We head out around 9-10 and spend as much time as we can on the slopes before we head in for the day. Some of us just enjoy riding casually down the hill while others are attempting jumps. I usually try to video tape and see what kind of videos I can get. If you check out my videos on Facebook, you can check out a video of my cousin Sam from about 4 years ago. he thinks he is going to hit this jump and ends up wiping out. I can watch it over and over and I find it hilarious every single time. I posted the video on the link below as well.

Ohhhhh Sam.

When we get back to the hotel the family splits up. Some of the family heads to the Chinese buffet while others go to Sawmill, the local bar and have burgers and sandwiches. The weekend always flies by but it is a great time hanging out with my family.

April

April 8th- As you guys probably saw on Social Media, Cassidy and I both love our anniversary and why shouldn't we? It is a day that in a way is kinda ours. The day we decided that being together was better than being apart. This year we celebrated our 4th anniversary and went to the Twins home opener yesterday. We then went to Pizza Luce and shared some food and then spent the night at her apartment just being together. I had a job fair today and she had a Biology test and so she studied while I watched the NCAA Championship game. Great trade off right? I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with that girl and sorry if you guys have to read the cheesy posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter ;)

NFL Draft-My favorite draft of the 4 major sports because of how much I love the Vikings and because of how big of an event the draft has become. The first round is now on Thursday night and it is always a event full of speculation. Last year the Vikings surprised us all by getting back into the 1st round and grabbing CP84. Patterson had a great rookie year and so far it seems like we had a great draft last year. This year we pick 8th and many are speculating that we will take a QB. The "Ponder Project" seems to be coming to an end and many are ready for the next chapter of Vikings football. Usually on draft night I sit with my computer on my lap and sit back and watch each team pick while trying to predict who they will get before it is announced. Twitter is great on draft night. So many people have different opinions on who is better than who and what player each team should take. It is great! Everyone becomes a draft expert, if only for a couple hours.

So there you have it. My favorite days from January-April. I was going to wait to post all 12 months in one blog but decided that it would be a lot to read. Look forward to May-August coming out in a week or so (I hope)
